As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, here are the key requirements and considerations of the WEEE Directive for refrigerators in the EU market:

Producer Responsibility

Producers, including manufacturers and importers, are responsible for ensuring that end-of-life refrigerators are properly collected, treated, and recycled. They are required to finance the cost of these activities.

Take-Back Obligation

Producers must establish systems to collect used refrigerators from consumers and businesses, allowing them to return their old appliances at no cost when purchasing new ones.

Proper Treatment and Recycling

Refrigerators must be treated and recycled in an environmentally sound manner to recover valuable materials and minimize environmental impact. Hazardous substances must be removed and managed appropriately.

Recycling and Recovery Targets

The WEEE Directive sets specific targets for recycling and recovery of different components and materials in refrigerators. These targets aim to increase the recycling and recovery rates, minimizing the disposal of electronic waste in landfills.
