What is RoHS Certification ?
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)
RoHS, which stands for "Restriction of Hazardous Substances," is a directive adopted by the European Union (EU) to restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The primary goal of RoHS is to reduce the environmental and health risks associated with the use of hazardous materials in electronics and to promote the safe disposal and recycling of electronic waste. The directive aims to protect both the environment and human health by reducing the use of substances that can be harmful if released into the environment.
What are RoHS Certificate's Requirements on Refrigerators for Europe Market ?
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliance requirements for refrigerators intended for the European market are aimed at ensuring that these appliances do not contain certain hazardous substances above specified limits. RoHS compliance is a legal requirement in the European Union (EU) and is essential for selling electronic and electrical products, including refrigerators, in the EU. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the following are key requirements for RoHS compliance in the context of refrigerators:
Restrictions on Hazardous Substances
The RoHS Directive restricts the use of specific hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, including refrigerators. The restricted substances and their maximum allowable concentrations are:
Lead (Pb): 0.1%
Mercury (Hg): 0.1%
Cadmium (Cd): 0.01%
Hexavalent Chromium (CrVI): 0.1%
Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): 0.1%
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): 0.1%
Documentation
Manufacturers must maintain documentation and records that demonstrate compliance with RoHS requirements. This includes supplier declarations, test reports, and technical documentation for the components and materials used in the refrigerator.
Testing
Manufacturers may need to conduct testing to ensure that the components and materials used in their refrigerators do not exceed the maximum allowed concentrations of restricted substances.
CE Marking
RoHS compliance is often indicated by the CE marking, which is affixed to the product. While the CE marking is not specific to RoHS, it indicates overall compliance with EU regulations.
Declaration of Conformity (DoC)
Manufacturers must issue a Declaration of Conformity stating that the refrigerator complies with the RoHS Directive. This document should be available for review and should be signed by an authorized representative of the company.
Authorized Representative (if applicable)
Non-European manufacturers may need to appoint an authorized representative based within the EU to ensure compliance with EU regulations, including RoHS.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive
In addition to RoHS, manufacturers must consider the WEEE Directive, which covers the collection, recycling, and proper disposal of electrical and electronic equipment, including refrigerators, at the end of their life cycle.
Market Access
Compliance with RoHS is necessary for selling refrigerators in the European market, and non-compliance can lead to the removal of products from the market.
