How to Change the Side on Which Your Refrigerator Door Opens
Reversing the door of a refrigerator can be a bit challenging, but with the right tools and instructions, it can be done easily. Here are the steps to reverse the door on your refrigerator:
Materials you'll need:
Screwdriver
Adjustable wrench
Drill
5/16-inch hex-head socket driver
Putty knife or similar tool for removing trim pieces
New door handle (if needed)
Step 1: Unplug the Refrigerator
The first and most important step in reversing your refrigerator's door is to unplug it. This is important for your safety, as well as to prevent any damage to the refrigerator during the process.
Step 2: Remove the Hinges and Handle
The next step is to remove the hinges and handle from the refrigerator door. This will require the use of a screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. Remove the screws from the hinges and remove the handle by prying off any plastic covers and unscrewing the screws that hold it in place.
Step 3: Remove the Door
With the hinges removed, you can now remove the door from the refrigerator. Carefully lift the door off of the bottom hinge and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the Hinge Receptacles
Next, remove the hinge receptacles from the opposite side of the refrigerator. These are the pieces that the hinges attach to. They will need to be removed and repositioned on the opposite side of the refrigerator.
Step 5: Move the Hinge Receptacles to the Other Side
Once the hinge receptacles have been removed, reposition them on the opposite side of the refrigerator. This will require the use of a drill to make new holes for the screws.
Step 6: Reinstall the Hinges
Now it's time to reattach the hinges to the opposite side of the refrigerator. Start by attaching the top hinge to the hinge receptacle, and then attach the bottom hinge to the bottom of the refrigerator.
Step 7: Reinstall the Door
Once the hinges are securely in place, you can now reattach the door to the refrigerator. Carefully lift the door onto the bottom hinge and attach the top hinge to the door.
Step 8: Reinstall the Handle
With the door back in place, you can now reattach the handle to the opposite side of the refrigerator. If your refrigerator came with a door handle for both sides, you can simply attach the handle to the new location. If not, you may need to purchase a new handle for the opposite side.
Step 9: Test the Door
Before plugging the refrigerator back in, make sure to test the door to ensure that it opens and closes smoothly. If everything looks good, plug the refrigerator back in and you're all set!
Reversing the door on your refrigerator can be a bit of a challenge, but with the right tools and instructions, it can be done easily. Just be sure to follow these steps carefully and take your time to ensure that everything is done correctly.
